APRIL 2023 - Habitats , an artist book, ready to pre-order!

Hello my fellow terrestrials! I'm here sharing awesome news:
am currently working with Cereal Box Studio in the creation of my first artist book. This work will be a collection of selected poems I wrote between 2020 and 2023. The book will feature some new art pieces I am currently working on as well.
This project is the result of a long time invested in exploration of the self. As part of this process, within a few years I changed my place of residence, my art practice and my lifestyle, to accommodate room for growth and nourishment. It was important to me to live fully aligned with my values of Intention, Gratitude, Integrity, Service, Freedom, and Presence. It was a challenging process at times, and looking back I am grateful for all of it.
Learning to listen to Nature drove me to start painting again, and inspired a kind of writing that happens in the intersection of my self and the Land. This book documents those encounters, where grief and sadness are met with love and hope, under the canopy of – and supported by - Mother Earth.
I read somewhere that the purpose of a gift is to share it; I hope you are willing to receive mine.
Lastly, the book comes alive partly to support the expenses connected with my O1B visa renewal application. This is a particularly expensive process which I am currently covering for myself. This is a perfect opportunity to acquire a special work of love and art while contributing to a noble cause.
The book is $50. The first 50 books go to cover the cost of production. At this time, we have opened preordering here.
Books will be ready by early September 2023.
The first 100 books preordered come with one mixed media screenprint from a limited edition I’m making solely for this purpose.
I hope I can count on your support. Thank you for becoming one of my art collectors!
In Gratitude,
Julia

DECEMBER 2022: SELECTED as one of ArtsWave FY2023 Black and Brown Artists grant program recipient.

My project "Walking the Winter" was selected from a competitive group of applications in December 2022. Walking the Winter is a series of free, open to all series of meetings in Clifton area - Burnet Woods. They were created with the intention of providing for a space where we could create community and find comfort, healing and friendship during the cold months of winter. The project took place between January 2023 and April 2023, bringing together more than 150 people and 8 different facilitators, including artists, birders, nature experts, poets and writers.

Inspired by these encounters, I am creating an installation that will be part of a showcase at the Freedom Center in mid July.

Thank you for this opportunity to give, share and nourish each other!

MAY-JUNE 2022: SELECTED as Artist in Residence at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory AIR program

I am in Iowa, everyone! I got the super good news at the beginning of March that I had been selected to be part of the first cohort of artists in residence for the 2022 season at Iowa Lakeside Lab; it just took me a bit longer to get all caught up with life before making the announcement.

A bit about the space:

Lakeside's 147-acre campus is located on scenic West Okoboji Lake, on Little Millers Bay. The bay and adjacent natural areas are used as outdoor classrooms for Lakeside's university courses and Outreach Programs. The campus is open year round, and visitors are welcome to visit during daylight hours. Lakeside Lab aims to be a national model for immersive, field-based research, and education.

Excited to be here!
